stART - I Wish That I Had Duck Feet

I wish that I had duck feet.
And I can tell you why.
You can splash around with duck feet.
You don't have to keep them dry.
.
This book, written by Theo LeSieg, is a whimsical story about a boy who wishes for duck feet, deer horns, and other animal body parts, until he learns that the best thing to be is himself.
.
I think there are some things I do not wish to be.
And that is why I think that I just wish to be like ME.
.
We've read this book many times and it is fun to read. Today during Baby J's late afternoon nap Toddler M and I looked at the book together. I didn't just read in the background as Toddler M played (I'll often do this, with Baby J in arms, a technique I started when Toddler M reached the "always on the go" stage). Instead, Toddler M and I really looked at the book together.
.
We laughed together about the silly things the boy imagined. I pointed to the pictures of duck feet in the book and talked about what they looked like, and cut out two duck feet shapes from construction paper. I pointed out that the duck feet in the book are orange, and Toddler M used an orange crayon to color our duck feet. The next animal part the boy imagines is deer horns, and we also cut out and colored two deer horns. Then we had fun putting the duck feet on our feet and holding deer horns on our head. I had a great time watching Toddler M attempt to walk with the paper duck feet on top of his feet. We didn't get past the deer horns part of the book today, so we may be making more animal parts tomorrow!

  2. Now you have me wondering what other animal parts he imagines. We'll have to track this one down in the library.

  6. We like this book too - it's so cute when the boy imagines his mom's reaction to his animal features. Fun to read and you found a great project to make.
